FIREFLIES

Through the heavy darkness
descending on the lawn,
fireflies flicker
to an undecipherable rhythm
of their own making—
sending coded messages
in soundless Morse:
announcing high tide,
urging the full moon to force its way
through the cleavage in the clouds,
praising the perfect rings of Saturn.
