Walter Smelt
Mt. Auburn Cemetery

The old family names of Boston,
that were like mansions to their keepers,
have been shed on the short trip
across the river to Mt. Auburn St.
Their polished letters are cut
in statues and stones, but a vertical
stone is a poor roof, and the weather
reaches the Lowells from all around
now that they summer and winter
in the same place. They are rolling
in the slow tides of the soil.
